Regina, SK: Three elementary schools in the area of the 300 block of Rose Street were briefly placed in “Secure the Building”* mode this afternoon as police searched the area for a male suspect believed to be carrying a firearm. The “Secure the Building” protocol was lifted at about 3:25 p.m.
At approximately 2:36 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2016, police were called to a residence in the 300 block of Rose Street. The homeowner had come home to find two unknown males in the house; one was holding an edged weapon, the other was holding a firearm. The males fled the house, running westbound. Police were able to apprehend the male with the edged weapon but could not locate the male carrying the firearm. Three elementary schools in the area were placed in “Secure the Building” as a precaution and School Boards advised. Initially, parents and other caregivers were asked not to come to the schools, but shortly before 3:30 p.m., with several patrol members in the area and police officers at the schools, the “Secure the Building” protocol was lifted. It was felt an orderly dismissal could occur with police officers present in the area and at the schools.
The second male suspect remains at large and police are continuing their search for this individual. There is not, at this time, enough information to provide a description of this suspect; however, it’s hoped further investigation will provide more information to the public. Of course, anyone who has information that could assist police in this investigation is asked to contact the Regina Police Service at 306-777-6500 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
*“Secure the Building”: Is a situation where it is believed a threat is currently outside the building resulting in the decision to secure the school whereby all outside doors will be locked to secure the building. Each exterior door is to be monitored by designated school staff until Secure the Building mode has been lifted. Entry and exit of the building will be at the front doors only and are to be monitored by police and school administration.
