Saskatoon, SK: Saskatoon Police responded to just under 1000 calls for service over the weekend, more than the average of approximately 900 calls.
Included in the those calls were approximately 25 reports of intoxicated people, 15 reports of break and enter, 11 reports of missing persons, 10 reports of stolen vehicles, and five incidents where suspects in stolen vehicles evaded police or attempted to.
On September 18, 2016 at 4:00 a.m. a man reported to police that a man and a woman had threatened him with a knife, punched him, and stole his vehicle while in the 2000 block of 22nd Street West. Later that day, at approximately 3:15 p.m. an officer on patrol spotted the stolen red Dodge Avenger at Avenue H and 21st Street. The officer attempted a traffic stop, however the suspect refused to stop and evaded the officer. The officer called for other units to assist. The suspect vehicle struck construction barricades at 30th Street and Avenue H and drove over a tire deflation device that other officers had employed. The suspect was slowed down but still proceeded to jump a curb and strike a fence at 33rd Street and Avenue B, before proceeding north on Idylwyld Drive. The vehicle then turned into Aberdeen Place where the male and female suspects attempted to flee on foot. Both were quickly brought into custody. They are now facing numerous charges. The man is also wanted on several warrants from Regina.
At approximately 4:40 a.m. September 18, 2016, a canine officer spotted a black Toyota Tundra at 37th Street and Idylwyld Drive. It was the same vehicle which had been reported stolen and had evaded officers attempting to stop it half an hour earlier. The vehicle was traveling with no headlights. The officer followed the vehicle from a distance and called for additional units to assist. The suspect traveled to Circle Drive at Faithfull Avenue where he jumped a curb and continued on Faithfull to 51st Street where he struck a power pole. A man and woman both attempted to flee on foot. The woman was brought into custody quickly. The man attempted to hide inside a commercial garbage bin and struggled as officers attempted to remove him. The suspect suffered an injury consistent with a dog bite. A number of charges are pending.
