Woman Lays Motorcycle Down at Highway Speed in Collision With Hay Bale on Highway 23

RCMP-1205High River, Alberta – On September 18th, 2016 at approximately 4:45 pm, High River RCMP, High River Fire, Foothills Fire, Blackie Fire and EMS responded to an injury motorcycle collision on Highway 23 near Blackie, Alberta.


The investigation revealed that a westbound pickup truck towing a dump trailer was loaded with square hay bales when a hay bale fell or blew off the trailer landing on highway 23 near 272nd street East in the westbound lane. A large group of motorcycle riders were following behind. One female motorcyclist collided with the bale and layed down her motorcycle at highway speed. The 41 year old Calgary woman was transported to Calgary Hospital via STARS helicopter. The extent of her injuries are unknown at this time. Speed and alcohol are not deemed to be factors in the collision. The cause of the collision was an unsecured load of hay bales.

A 60 year old High River man, who was operating the pickup truck hauling a load of hay has been charged under Section 64(2) of the Vehicle Equipment Regulations with transporting goods without securing the goods properly. He was also charged with Section 51(a) of the Traffic Safety Act with Operating a motor vehicle without a licence. The male driver of the pickup truck was not injured.
