16 year old jaywalking struck by truck-airlifted to Children’s Hospital

Nanaimo, BC: On Tuesday, September 21, 2016 at approximately 8:15 pm, Nanaimo RCMP responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck by a pick up truck at Mary Ellen Drive and the Island Highway. A driver of a GMC pick up had been proceeding North on the Island Highway, in the right hand lane. As he neared the intersection of Mary Ellen Drive and Island Highway a 16 yr old girl ran across the highway, in the south east crosswalk, against a red light. He was not able to stop and the girl was struck. Witnesses state she was thrown in the air approximately 60 feet landing in the north east cross walk. Her friend immediately pulled her off the roadway and witnesses stopped to provide first aid. RCMP officers and an off duty nurse arrived and assisted with first aid until paramedics arrived on scene.

The girl sustained an injury to her head and femur. She was to undergo surgery Wednesday morning for the injury to her femur, however her condition deteriorated overnight and she was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Vancouver this morning.

The pickup sustained damage to the headlight, grill and hood. The driver was very shaken and Nanaimo RCMP Victim Services will be providing support to him as well as the young girl.

The investigation remains ongoing and speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors to this accident.
