25-Year-Old Male on Life Support Following Serious Assault, Saskatchewan Male Arrested

Winkler, Manitoba – Our hearts go out to the family whose loved one was the victim of a senseless assault Saturday night. The 25 year old male resident of Saskatchewan remains on life support at Health Sciences Center in Winnipeg at this time.

Winkler police officers were called to the Valley Bowling Lanes one minute before midnight on Saturday where an argument over an unpaid debt between two males well known to each other, turned violent. The victim was struck several times with a pool cue and was reported to be unconscious. The first police officer arriving on scene immediately began CPR while other responding officers began gathering the necessary information to locate the suspect.

Policing truly is a community partnership and this was again evident when a witness called Provincial 911 and followed the fleeing assailant, leading police directly to his location at the 7-Eleven where a safe arrest was made within minutes of the attack.

Justin Leslie Bird, 29, also from Saskatchewan is being held in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Center and is scheduled to appear in Portage Court today on charges of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

We want to thank all the witnesses for their patience, understanding, and assistance thru a long night and apologize for the inconvenience.
