Edmundston, New Brunswick – Two New Brunswick men, 67-year-old Oneil Devost of Edmundston and 50-year-old Richard Cyr of Baker Brook, have been charged with conspiracy to smuggle a person across the border.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred in July 2016, when authorities became aware that a 46-year-old woman had entered into the United States illegally by crossing the Saint John River with a paddle boat. The woman, an Ecuadorean national, was apprehended by U.S. authorities in Van Buren, Maine, shortly after she crossed into the country. She remains in the United States.
On July 28, members of the RCMP arrested both men following the execution of search warrants at their respective residences. Both men were later released on promises to appear.
On October 17, 2016, in Edmundston Provincial Court, they were charged with conspiracy to smuggle a person across a border. They have been released with conditions, and are scheduled to appear in court again on November 21, 2016.
