Bear spray incident ruins Trick or Treating for local family

Nanaimo, BC: A local family had their evening of fun filled Trick or Treating ruined when and irate driver sprayed them and several bystanders with a blast of bear spray. All of the affected were treated at the scene by attending BC Paramedics. The male driver left the area and was not located.

At approximately 8 pm on Monday October 31st, the Nanaimo RCMP was alerted to a vehicle in the area of Cilaire and Montrose reportedly driving too fast and revving its engine. Several parents were concerned as sidewalks were full with children going door to door. At one point the vehicle drove past and several parents yelled at the driver to slow down. During this exchange and adult male allegedly struck the passing vehicle with a flashlight causing some damage. The driver stopped and got out of his vehicle demanding to know who hit his vehicle. The suspect driver then grabbed a can of bear spray from his vehicle and sprayed not only the male who hit his vehicle but also his wife and 7 year son who were standing beside him. Other parents came to their assistance and were also contaminated by the spray. The suspect male then got back into his vehicle and drove off.

Witnesses managed to obtain the license plate number of the vehicle. The suspect driver, who appeared to be in his early 20’s was later identified and has provided a statement to investigators. The investigation is continuing and no determination has been made on charges.
