IIO BC called to investigate in-custody death

Prince George, BC: The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been notified after a man was found unresponsive while lodged in a Prince George RCMP cell.

On November 20, 2016, at 11:34 p.m. Prince George RCMP were called to the 100 block of Quebec St. after it was reported an intoxicated man was causing a disturbance. Police made patrols for the man and located him in the 1200 block of 2nd Ave. The man was arrested for being drunk in a public place and transported to Prince George RCMP Detachment where he was lodged in cells.

Shortly after 2 a.m (November 21), a cell check found the man to be unresponsive. The assistance of Emergency Health Services were requested and RCMP members initiated CPR. Upon arrival, Emergency Health Services took over resuscitation efforts and the man was pronounced deceased shortly before 3 am.

As per protocols, IIO BC was notified and they will now investigate if there is a connection between the man’s death and the actions of police. The RCMP has also initiated an Independent Officer Review of the incident as per existing policies.

Given the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information is being released by police at this time.
