Winkler Police Investigate Serious Sexual Assault

Winkler, Manitoba – On November 19, 2016 at approximately 7:06 p.m., the Winkler Police Service and EMS responded to a report of a female who had been assaulted at a residence in the 200 block of 4th Street. Police found a 20-year-old female suffering from serious injuries to her upper body. The victim was transported to hospital by ambulance where she was treated for her injuries and has since been released.

The investigation revealed that the victim had been associating with some friends at a residence on 4th Street when a 21-year-old male, who was known to the victim, asked the victim to have sex with him. When the victim refused, the male violently sexually assaulted her until shortly before police arrived, at which time the male fled the residence.

On November 20, 2016, the Winkler Police Service located and arrested the suspect at a residence in Carman, Manitoba.

Austin William Swark, of Carman, Manitoba, has been charged with Aggravated Sexual Assault, Utter Threats, Break and Enter with Intent to Commit an Indictable Offence, Forcible Confinement, Attempt to Overcome Resistance by Choking, Theft Under $5000, Obstruct Justice by Bribery, two counts of Breach Undertaking Given to a Peace Officer, and two counts of Breach Probation.

Austin Swark was remanded in custody and is set to appear in Portage la Prairie Provincial Court on November 28, 2016.
