Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – The Saskatoon Police Service is currently investigating a telephone extortion plot that was took place this morning shortly after 11:00 AM.
Staff at an establishment in the 300 block of 33rd St. west received a phone call from man demanding cash and pre-paid credit cards. The suspect indicated that if his demands were not met he would call in other people with guns and explosives to further press his demands.
The building in question was evacuated as police arrived. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic was restricted in the area. Officers conducted checks to make sure there was no cause for alarm and an explosives detection canine team was used to further clear the building.
Police were able to quickly determine that the phone number the caller was calling from has been the subject of fraudulent scams in the past. Police have cleared the scene and traffic is back to normal.
