Brandon, Manitoba – Shortly before midnight, an officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the 2800 block of Victoria Ave after observing the vehicle driving erratically on 34th St.
The vehicle, a 2001 GMC Jimmy, accelerated away and went south on 26th St, attempting to evade the officer by turning down several side streets. The driver continued on Maryland Ave and then Aberdeen Ave to 1st St where he went south to Highway 110. The vehicle briefly entered the ditch at Richmond Ave East but was able to continue to flee and headed west on #110.
A spike belt was deployed and incapacitated 3 tires on the vehicle which led to the vehicle stopping. The driver attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended in a field near Highway #10 and Highway #110.
The Police Service Dog Unit located a quantity of drugs near the vehicle. The driver was searched and large quantity of cash was found in his possession.
A sample of his breath was within the legal limit however it is believed he was impaired by a drug or other substance at the time of the incident. The investigation into the money and other items found in the vehicle is continuing.
The driver, a 30-year-old man from Brandon, was lodged at Brandon Correctional Center and will appear in court on Tuesday on charges of Flight From Police, Dangerous Driving, Impaired Driving and several Highway Traffic Offences.
