Grande Prairie, Alberta – On Tuesday April 12, 2017 at approximately 4:50 pm, the RCMP responded to the area of 116 Avenue and 96 Street. for a complaint of a male wearing what witnesses described as an explosive device.
Witnesses advised police that the male suspect was wearing a mask and what appeared to be an explosive device on his back. He was seen entering a local business near 112 Avenue and 98 Street. Once RCMP members arrived on scene, they were able to safely remove the staff members from inside the business.
Shortly thereafter, police made contact with the male and determined that he was wearing a costume and there was no threat to the public. The male cooperated with police and exited the business where he was taken into custody without further incident.
The male was later released from custody without criminal charges.
The Grande Prairie RCMP would like to thank the public for taking this incident seriously. As a matter of public safety, police caution that anyone in possession of an imitation weapon or explosive device will be treated as if the item is real until proven otherwise.
