UPDATE: Charges Laid in Murder of John William Rock, Edmonton Male Charged with Homicide

Grande Prairie, Alberta – On April 28th, 2017, the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit (MCU – North) completed a two and a half year investigation into the shooting death of John William Rock, 28 years of age, of Edmonton.

Rock was shot outside of the Canadian Brew House in Grande Prairie, Alberta, on October 1st,, 2014. He succumbed to his injuries. The subsequent investigation was led by the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit, with the assistance of the Grande Prairie RCMP Detachment and the Edmonton Police Service.

Nicholas Richard Harris, 35 years of age, of Edmonton, Alberta, has been charged with one count of first degree murder, possession of a restricted Firearm, possession of a restricted firearm without holding a subsisting license, and possession of a restricted firearm while prohibited from doing so.

Harris’ first appearance in Grande Prairie Provincial Court is set for May 15, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. He remains in custody at this time.

Officers search storm pond for evidence in homicide case – Update #2

Grande Prairie, Alberta – RCMP continues to investigate the fatal shooting that occurred outside at the Canadian Brewhouse in the early morning hours of October 1, 2014.

Police are on scene at a body of water on the west side of Grande Prairie. RCMP officers are searching for evidence in relation to the shooting.

Constable Michelle Monsher, Grande Prairie RCMP Detachment Media Relations Officer, will be available for comment at 8:30 p.m. tonight, at the search location.

Victim identified in homicide investigation – Update #1

Grande Prairie, Alberta – An autopsy was completed at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Edmonton this afternoon and the victim in this matter was identified as John William Rock, a 28-year-old man from Edmonton.

To date, investigators have established that Mr. Rock was a patron of the establishment, The Canadian Brewhouse pub, the evening of the incident. Shortly after exiting the bar, Mr. Rock was shot in the parking lot. Officers are seeking the assistance of patrons who may have visited the establishment that evening.

This investigation to date reveals that this homicide was not a random act.

October 1, 2014

RCMP officers investigate death of adult male

Grande Prairie, Alberta – At approximately 1:00 a.m. on October 1, 2014, Grande Prairie RCMP officers and local emergency services responded to a complaint of shots fired in a commercial parking lot located at the corner of 108 Street and 104a Avenue in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Upon arrival of emergency services, a severely injured person was located lying on the ground. The young adult male was immediately transported to local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

An investigation in this incident was immediately initiated by Grande Prairie General Investigation Section. RCMP Edmonton Major Crimes Unit and other specialized units are currently assisting with the investigation. RCMP remains at the scene continuing their investigation.

An autopsy as yet to be scheduled.
