Several Police Mountain Bike trained members will be patrolling Airdrie starting this week. Officers are very excited to launch this community policing initiative. Bike patrol officers will focus patrols in the pedestrian-busy areas of the City including: paths and parks. However, bike patrol officers can also do traffic control, traffic enforcement, and respond to calls. Officers will also be working with schools and children to educate youngsters on bicycle safety.

There are quite a few advantages for bike patrol officers: They can access heavily congested areas a lot easier than a cruiser and can move into areas without being seen or heard. They are also a lot more approachable for the public to ask for help or even to just ask questions. The public doesn’t usually expect to see a bike patrol officer so, they are often caught by surprise when first approached.

Keep an eye out for bike patrol officers this summer and don’t be afraid to stop and say Hi to them.
