RCMP Coaldale Investigate Serious Motor Vehicle Collision on Highway 5

Coaldale, Alberta – On 2017 May 16 at around 9:40 a.m. the Coaldale RCMP, Lethbridge Integrated Traffic Services (RCMP/Sheriff) along with Lethbridge Fire/EMS responded to a two vehicle collision on Highway 5 approximately six kilometers south of the Lethbridge Airport. The collision involved a semi truck hauling a tandem trailer heading southbound colliding with a northbound pickup truck. There were only the drivers in the respective vehicles. It appeared the northbound pickup truck collided into the semi truck in the southbound lane.

The driver of the black pickup, a male in his mid fifties, suffered serious injuries and was transported to the Chinook Regional Hospital for treatment. The driver of the semi truck was not physically injured.

The Lethbridge RCMP Collision reconstructionist is assisting with this investigation which remains on going. At this time the cause of the collision is not known.

Highway 5 south of Highway 508 will remained closed pending this completion of this investigation. It is expected the highway will reopen to regular traffic at around 4 p.m.. Traffic is being re-routed around the collision scene during the interim.
