Whitehorse RCMP officer facing Sexual Assault charge

Whitehorse, Yukon – An RCMP officer has been charged in relation to his on-duty conduct.

On January 4th, 2017, a male Whitehorse RCMP officer allegedly touched a female RCMP employee without consent, while on duty at RCMP headquarters in Whitehorse.

The incident was reported to Yukon RCMP senior managers shortly after it occurred. A criminal investigation was initiated, as well as the internal RCMP Conduct process.

Following consultation with the Yukon Department of Justice and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), it was determined that the statutory investigation would be led by a senior Yukon RCMP investigator, and that ASIRT would conduct a review of the investigation once complete.

The investigation and review concluded that a charge for sexual assault was recommended.

On May 25th, the RCMP officer was charged with one count of Sexual Assault under Section 271 of the Criminal Code. He is scheduled to appear in Yukon Territorial Court on June 14th, 2017.

The police officer in question has 17 years’ service with the RCMP. He has been suspended with pay since February 6, 2017.

The RCMP Conduct process is continuing.

As this matter is now before the court, no further information will be provided.
