Grande Prairie, Alberta – On Saturday June 10, 2017 at approximately 6:50 pm Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a call of a missing boater on the Smokey River near Riverstone Golf course.
The male had been travelling down the Smokey River earlier in the day with two females when their canoe capsized. All three were able to grab onto a log and float for several hours. At one point the two females were able to swim to shore however the male did not attempt it as he was too fatigued. Numerous resources including STARS air ambulance, Search and Rescue from Grande Prairie and Grovedale and County Fire Rescue assisted with a search of the river and surrounding area. The two females were located along the side of the river suffering from hypothermia.
The search continues for the male with the assistance of RCMP Air Services helicopter as well a privately owned helicopter. Ground search has been suspended due to high level of fast moving water, large debris floating down the river and dangerous search conditions.
