Kayaker located with coordinated response

Cascumpec Bay, Prince Edward Island – On June 23rd, 2017 at approximately 5:00 p.m, the Prince District RCMP received a report of a missing kayaker in the Cascumpec Bay area of Prince County. A husband and wife were reported to have been kayaking from the sand-dunes back to shore when they encountered deteriorating weather conditions. One of the kayakers was able to return safely to shore but the other was taken away by the increasing strong winds.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax was notified and in conjunction with the Prince District RCMP, immediately dispatched a Canadian Coast Guard Vessel from Alberton to the area. Members of the Alberton Fire Department and Island Emergency Services also attended to assist.

At approximately 6:20 p.m., the Coast Guard vessel located the male in shallow water, a short distance from land, after his kayak had capsized. He was assessed by Island Emergency Services and later released.

Recreational boaters and pleasure craft operators are reminded this summer season to be mindful of changing weathers conditions and the effects this has on their ability to travel safely.
