Winnipeg Assault Victim Dies, Charges Upgraded to Manslaughter

Winnipeg, Manitoba – On June 19, 2017, at approximately 11:10 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service Cadets and Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services personnel were in the area of the first 100 block of Martha Street when they were summoned by bystanders to assist a male who had been seriously assaulted.

First aid was provided to the male victim who had suffered significant head trauma. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition.

A suspect in the assault had been identified by witnesses and was located in the area by cadets.

Sydney Eric Norman Fleury, a 43-year-old male, had been charged with Aggravated Assault and was detained in custody.

On June 21, 2017, the victim succumbed to his injuries. He was identified as Marvin Elias Caribou, a 37-year-old.

On June 22, 2017, Major Crime Unit investigators attended the Winnipeg Remand Centre and placed Fleury under arrest. He now faces an upgraded charge of Manslaughter due to his alleged involvement.

He was detained in custody.
