Dugas, New Brunswick – Caraquet RCMP is investigating a fatal collision involving three cars on Route 11, in Dugas in the evening of July 8, 2017.
A couple, a 72-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were in one of the cars involved. They both died at the scene.
A family with a man, a woman and a girl, who were in the second car involved, sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital. The girl was later airlifted to another hospital, in Halifax.
Three young men who were in their late teens or early twenties were in the third car involved. None of them were hurt.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the car occupied by the three young men was southbound when it hit the back of the car occupied by the 72 and 57-year-old couple. After the impact, the person driving the latter lost control of the car, which crossed the centre line. The car occupied by the family, which was northbound, hit the side of the couple’s car.
After the collision, the three young men fled the scene in their car, which was later found, burned, in a gravel pit in the Bertrand area. The driver of that car was later arrested, then released on a promise to appear and an undertaking.
The investigation is ongoing. An RCMP collision reconstructionist was called to the scene.
