Calgary Police respond to assault on firefighters

Calgary, Alberta – Two people are in custody following an assault that occurred while firefighters were responding to a fire alarm in an apartment building yesterday evening.

At approximately 5:50 p.m., on Wednesday, July 26, 2017, the Calgary Fire Department responded to an apartment building, located in the 800 block of 15 Ave. S.W., for reports that a fire alarm was going off. Once on scene, two firefighters encountered a man in the building’s stairwell. At this point, a physical confrontation occurred and the firefighters were assaulted and threatened with a weapon. The man then retreated into a suite. The firefighters called for police, then exited the building.

Police arrived at approximately 6 p.m. and entered the building to find the door to the suite closed, with two individuals believed to be inside. After breaching the door, police took a man and a woman into custody.

No one was injured as a result of the incident. Charges against one man are pending.
