Desmarais RCMP charge man with second degree murder

Desmarais, Alberta – The investigation into the death of 21-year-old Desmarais resident, Joelle Cardinal**, has led to the arrest of Dwayne Beauregard** (20), also of Desmarais, who has been charged with second degree murder in the case.

The RCMP has been investigating the matter since the early morning hours of Monday, July 31, 2017, after it first received a report of a disturbance at a residence in the community of Desmarais and where Joelle Cardinal was found deceased. The ongoing investigation is utilizing specialized resources such as the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit (MCU) from Edmonton and Forensic Identification Section (FIS), together with assets from the RCMP Desmarais Detachment.

Police located Beauregard in a residence in Desmarais and arrested him on outstanding warrants originating from another police agency without incident on the night of August 1, 2017. He was formally arrested for the murder of Joelle Cardinal the following day.

The victim and accused were known to one another. There were several witnesses to the incident which led to the death of Ms. Cardinal and the detachment’s Victim Services Unit (VSU) has been involved in providing support to Ms. Cardinal’s family and anyone else found to be in need of such services.

Dwayne Beauregard will be making his first court appearance in Edmonton via CCTV on Friday, August 4, 2017.
This matter is now before the court and, as such, additional details of the case or about the accused and or the victim will not be provided by the RCMP.
