IIO BC Called to Investigate Arrest in Nanaimo

Nanaimo, BC – Just after 4:30 PM on Thursday August 3rd, Nanaimo RCMP were called to the 1400 block of Bowen Road. A report was received with respect to a disruptive male on bus #1073, route 30, outbound to Woodgrove Mall, who was allegedly threatening passengers and inappropriately touching females on the bus.

A Nanaimo RCMP officer attended and found the male had departed the bus. The subject male was located nearby and the Nanaimo RCMP officer attempted to place him under arrest. The male allegedly resisted arrest and the incident ended with the male on the ground. Due to injuries sustained during the incident, the male was almost immediately transported to a nearby hospital, for treatment of possible life threatening injuries. He has since been transferred to a larger area hospital in stable condition. Neither, the RCMP officer, nor any other members of the public were injured.

The scene and any evidence have been secured while the Independent Investigation Office of BC have been notified and are deploying to the scene. IIO BC will assume conduct of this investigation as they work to determine if there is a connection to the actions of police and the injuries sustained by the male.
