Prince Albert Police Service Weekend Update – August 8, 2017

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan – It was a busy long weekend for the Prince Albert Police Service with 294 calls for service resulting in 58 people being arrested.

The top three calls for service included: 39 calls for intoxicated persons and 31 calls for disturbances.

File #17-26774: MVA/Impaired operation of a motor vehicle

On Saturday August 5, 2017 at approximately 11:42 p.m., officers responded to a call for a RID (Report Impaired Driver) complaint that had caused a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) on 1400 28 Street East and then drove away.

The vehicle was located driving towards 15 Avenue East and emergency lights and sirens were activated by officers stopping the vehicle. The female driver of the vehicle had appearances of intoxication when approached by officers. The female was arrested and an Approved Screening Device (ASD) was conducted in the back of the officer vehicle which the driver failed. She was brought back to cells and failed two subsequent breathalyzer tests.

The 42-year-old female from Prince Albert is charged with one count of operating a vehicle while impaired, one count of exceeding .08 and two counts of having the care, charge or control of a motor vehicle that was involved in an accident with a person or vehicle at 1400 28 Street East with intent to escape and fail to stop their vehicle or offer assistance to person who was injured or required assistance (Information # 991021455).

The suspect will make their first appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court today.

File # 17-26837: MVA/Impaired Operation of a motor vehicle

On Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 12:45 a.m. a vehicle with expired license plates was identified by patrol officers and emergency lights and sirens were activated to stop the vehicle which was traveling on 2nd Avenue West then turned onto 28 Street. The vehicle failed to stop and officers followed at a safe distance due to concerns for public and officer safety as the vehicle picked up speed. The vehicle traveled back to 2nd Avenue West and accelerated speeds down the hill and lost control of the vehicle crashing into a street sign and coming to a stop at the intersection of 15 Street West.

At approximately 12:51 a.m. the driver was arrested by officers. Upon arrest the driver smelled of alcohol. An Approved Screening Device (ASD) was conducted which the driver failed. The driver was taken back to cells and also failed subsequent breathalyzer tests.

The 41-year-old male from Ahtahkakoop First Nation is charged with operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, exceeding .08, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer and failed to stop the vehicle in order to evade the peace officer, operating a motor vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public, being at large of his undertaking to abstain from consumption of alcohol (Information #991021498).

The suspect will make their first appearance in Prince Albert Provincial Court today.

File # 17-26889 – Pursuit / Stolen Auto

On Saturday, August 5, 2017, at 8:07 p.m. a stolen vehicle was identified by patrol members traveling on the 100 Block of River Street West. The vehicle was followed for a distance traveling to 6 Avenue East towards 15 Street. Emergency lights and sirens were activated by patrol but the vehicle failed to stop. The vehicle traveled out of town southbound on Highway 3 South. Stop sticks were set up on the St. Louis and Davis Grid highway. The suspect vehicle attempted to travel back towards Prince Albert and ran over the stop sticks which successfully hit all four tires. The vehicle traveled for a short distance and then ran off-road into a slough. Three suspects exited the vehicle and fled.

K9 unit was brought in which tracked a male attempting to flee. PSD Daxa and handler Constable Bighetty successfully located the male who was arrested.

Two females were also located and arrested. One female was found while attempting to locate the male and was brought in without incident. The second female was found by setting up a track and PSD Daxa located her hiding in grass and was arrested.

Prince Albert Fire Department attended the scene and the vehicle was removed from the slough and towed.

A 28-year-old female from Prince Albert was charged with possession of stolen property, a motor vehicle (exceeding $5,000) (Information #991021508).

A 24-year-old male from Prince Albert is charged with operating a motor vehicle in a manner dangerous to the public, operating a motor vehicle while being pursued by a peace officer and attempting to evade the peace officer, assaulting an officer with intent to resist or prevent lawful arrest, being at large of his recognizance, and having in his possession stolen property, a motor vehicle (exceeding $5,000) (Information #991021494).

The suspects will appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court today.

File # 17-27012: Weapons

On Sunday, August 6, 2017 at 11:09 p.m. patrol was traveling southbound on 9 Avenue West near 15 Street and observed a vehicle driving erratically. Emergency lights and sirens were activated and a Traffic Safety Act stop conducted to check for driver sobriety. When officers approached the vehicle they noticed the male passenger on the front passenger side had a knife resting on his lap. The female driver and male passenger were ordered to exit the vehicle and the male was arrested without incident. The male suspect was searched and shotgun shells were found on his person. A vehicle search was conducted and shotgun shells, a loaded sawed off 12 gauge shotgun and a small baggie of methamphetamine were located where the male suspect was sitting in the vehicle.

The 24-year-old male from Prince Albert is charged with eight weapons related charges and one charge of possession of methamphetamine (Information # 991021549).

The suspect will answer to charges in Prince Albert Provincial Court today.
