24-year-old Winnipeg male car-jacked after meeting with someone they met on a popular dating site

Winnipeg, Manitoba – On August 21, 2017 at approximately 2:40 p.m., Winnipeg Police were alerted to a car-jacking in the area of Salter St. and Mountain Ave. A 24-year-old male reported that he responded to a post on a popular dating website, making arrangements to meet a female in the 300 block of Boyd Ave.

When the victim arrived, he was approached by a female, while still in his vehicle. Three youths then approached the victim’s vehicle, sprayed him with pepper spray, pulled him from his vehicle and threatened him. All four persons then fled with the victim’s vehicle and personal belongings. The victim did not sustain any injuries.

General Patrol officers observed the vehicle being operated in the downtown area and conducted a traffic stop. The vehicle was initially stopped but fled upon officers approaching. Members pursued the vehicle which eventually came to stop in the area of Broadway St. and Edmonton Ave. and all occupants fled on foot. All four were apprehended after a short foot chase. The pepper spray was recovered in the vehicle.

Officers learned that the arrested persons created a fake profile specifically for the purpose of luring a person to their location with the intention of committing a robbery.

Police have charged two 15-year-old and two 16-year-old youths, all of Winnipeg, and charged them with Robbery, Unauthorized Possession of a Restricted Weapon and several other offences.
