Kitscoty, Alberta – This morning at approximately 2:00 a.m., Kitscoty RCMP responded to a two vehicle motor collision at the intersection of Highway 45 and Highway 893.
Preliminary investigation indicates that a car travelling southbound on Highway 893 did not stop at the intersection and collided with a trailer of a northbound semi-truck while it was turning.
The car started on fire after the collision and the driver of the semi-truck was able to pull a male passenger out of the vehicle before it became fully engulfed.
Tragically, the 22-year-old male driver of the car from Edmonton was pronounced deceased at the scene. The 20-year-old passenger of the car from Lloydminster, suffered serious life-threatening injuries and was transported to local hospital by EMS and then flown via STARS to an Edmonton hospital.
The 27-year old male driver of the semi-truck from Norquay, Saskatchewan was not injured.
Traffic was re-routed at the intersection until 8:00 a.m., while a RCMP Collision Analyst continued to investigate. As this incident remains under investigation, no further information is available in relation to the cause, or contributing factors of the collision.
The name of the deceased will not be released.
