Strathmore RCMP advise Highway 1 is reopened to traffic

Strathmore, Alberta – Traffic is now flowing on Highway 1, following a fatal motor collision which occurred early this morning east of Strathmore.

At 3:51 a.m. RCMP were dispatched to attend a two vehicle collision. Preliminary investigation indicates that a tractor trailer unit and a tow truck were both traveling westbound when the two truck struck the rear of the tractor trailer. The tow truck caught fire as a result of the collision.

The 44-year-old driver of the tow truck was deceased on scene. The driver of the semi truck did not incur any injury. There were no other occupants in the vehicles.

Traffic was diverted today while crews were working on Highway 1 to secure goods from the tractor trailer unit and clear the lanes of travel on the highway.

An RCMP Collision Analyst attended the scene and the investigation into the cause of this collision remains ongoing. There is no further information available from the RCMP.

Strathmore, Alberta – Strathmore RCMP and the RCMP collision analyst are on scene of a fatal motor vehicle collision involving a tractor trailer unit and tow truck. One person was pronounced deceased on scene. Occupational health and safety has been engaged in the investigation.

Highway 1 east of Strathmore in the westbound lanes will be impassable while police complete their investigation. Travellers are encouraged to take an alternate route.
