Strathcona County, Alberta – On September 8, 2017 at 9:56 pm, Strathcona County RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver travelling Westbound on Highway 16. The suspect vehicle was located near Highway 16 and 17th Street, in Edmonton. A traffic stop was initiated and the suspect vehicle fled the area at high rate of speed. Due to the risk to public, the vehicle was subsequently not pursued by RCMP members. After fleeing the attempted traffic stop, the suspect vehicle became involved in a collision with a Ford truck at Victoria Trail. The driver fled the collision on foot, and was apprehended by RCMP after a short foot chase.
The driver of the vehicle was transported to the University of Alberta Hospital, where he was treated and released. The driver is currently in custody, pending a Judicial Interim Release Hearing.
A female passenger of the suspect vehicle was transported to the Royal Alexandra Hospital where she underwent surgery for injuries received in the collision. The driver of the Ford truck was transported to Sturgeon County Hospital with minor injuries.
The Edmonton Police Service will have carriage of the collision aspect of the investigation. The Strathcona County RCMP are pursuing a criminal investigation for impaired driving and possession of a stolen vehicle.
