27-Year-Old Male Extradited from USA to Stand Trial on Sexual Assault Charges

Winnipeg, Manitoba – During February 2010, members of the Child Abuse Unit began an investigation into an adult male that was suspected of a sexual assault.

On April 27, 2010, Daniel Enrique Cortez, a now 27-year-old male of Winnipeg, was charged with:

  • Sexual Assault (x2)
  • Sexual Interference (x2)
  • Incest (x2)

He was released on a Promise to Appear.

Cortez later fled to the United States of America where he assumed residency.

Members of the Winnipeg Police Service, along with the assistance of Manitoba Prosecution Service and the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, applied for an extradition order which was granted.

On August 23, 2017, Cortez was arrested in Grand Forks, North Dakota by members of the United States Marshals Service.

On September 13, 2017, at approximately 11:00 a.m., Cortez was turned over to the Winnipeg Police Service at the Pembina–Emerson Border Crossing. Cortez has been detained in custody.
