59-Year-Old Winnipeg Male Charged with Personating RCMP Officer

Winnipeg, Manitoba – During March 2017, members of the Major Crimes Unit began an investigation into an adult male who was believed to be falsely representing himself as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and part of their dive team.

An investigation revealed that the male had been using social media to communicate with a number of police and scuba driver groups. During these communications, the male would often portray himself as an experienced member of the RCMP and engage in discussions with unsuspecting victims.

On September 13, 2017, the suspect was located at a residence in the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue and placed under arrest.

Thomas David Hanaway, a 59-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:

  • Personating Peace Officer
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x3)

He was detained in custody.
