Charges laid in child abduction investigation; London man in custody

London, Ontario – Following an intense and extensive investigation, London Police arrested a man Monday, May 14, 2018, shortly after 6 pm in connection with the Mother’s Day abduction of a four-year-old girl.

At approximately 9:15 am on Sunday, May 13, 2018, the victim was outside with a sibling on Melsandra Avenue. A man stopped, exited his vehicle, grabbed the girl and placed her in his car before driving away. A witness observed the incident and contacted police by calling 9-1-1. With the young girl in his car, a man drove a short distance through the neighbourhood. It was reported that the man touched the girl inappropriately while she was in his vehicle. When the car stopped, the young girl was able to open the door and run home.

As a result of the investigation, Lawrence Allen Thompson, 65, of London, is charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:

  • Abduction of person under fourteen years of age;
  • Kidnapping;
  • Sexual assault on a person under 16 years of age; and
  • Sexual interference with person under 16 years of age.

The accused is in custody and is scheduled to appear in London court today in relation to the charges.

UPDATE- LONDON, ON (May 14th, 2018 ) – Members of the London Police Service have arrested an adult male this evening in relation to the abduction of a four-year-old girl which occurred in the area of Barker Street and Melsandra Avenue the morning of May 13, 2018. BACKGROUND:

LONDON, ON (May 14th, 2018)– On Sunday, May 13, 2018, London Police appealed to the public in relation to a child abduction in the north end of the city. An arrest was made early yesterday evening however, the person was released unconditionally. No charges have been laid and police are continuing to appeal to the public for assistance in identifying the suspect.

The four-year-old female was playing outside with a sibling when witnesses observed a vehicle stop in the middle of the intersection. An adult male exited the driver side of the car and approached the young girl. The male picked up the girl and placed her in the vehicle. Witnesses observed the car drive east on Melsandra Avenue before driving through the neighbourhood and stopping back in the area where the girl was originally picked up. Witnesses lost sight of the vehicle but were able to provide a description to police.

The young girl was dropped off in the area of her residence, and ran home to report the incident to her parents. She did not sustain any physical injuries.

An updated description of the suspect is:

Male, Caucasian, approximately 60 years old, 5’10″, average build, wearing a plaid shirt, brown framed glasses, grey hair, facial hair was described as having a bit of growth.

BACKGROUND:

LONDON, ON (May 13, 2018)– On Sunday May 13, 2018, at approximately 9:15 am, a four-year-old child was abducted in the area of Barker Street and Melsandra Avenue. The child was abducted by a male suspect operating a beige/gold coloured vehicle. Witnesses followed the vehicle and the child was located nearby, a short time later. The child did not suffer any physical injuries as a result of the incident.

The suspect is described as an older male and he was believed to be the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The vehicle has been identified as a gold or beige coloured older model Chevrolet Impala (four door sedan). Please see the attached image. Police are requesting assistance in identifying this vehicle.

The investigation has been assigned to members of the Criminal Investigation Division.
