Highway 93 Collision Leaves Six People Deceased, Two More in Serious Condition

Jasper, Alberta – The RCMP have cleared from a collision scene, but investigation remains ongoing into the crash which tragically left six people deceased, and two people in serious to life-threatening condition.

Last night at 6:30 p.m., RCMP were dispatched to a serious collision on Highway 93 at Honeymoon Lake. A van was travelling northbound, and collided with a vehicle travelling southbound. Preliminary investigation suggests the two collided head-on. Following the collision, both vehicles caught fire. A third vehicle, in an effort to avoid this collision, went off the road.

The van had five occupants, all members of a family who were visiting from the States. Two of those occupants were declared deceased on scene, while two were transported to Edmonton hospitals in very serious condition. The fifth occupant, a young toddler, was transported to the Jasper Hospital and was assessed as having no injury.

The southbound vehicle had four occupants, all of whom were determined to be deceased. Further information about these occupants is not available at this time.

The third vehicle that went off the road had two occupants who suffered only minor injuries.

Shortly after this initial collision, a second collision occurred 2 kilometres south of the collision scene, where one vehicle drove into the rear of another. This collision was not a part of the initial collision and will not be reported on further.

“Members of the public were enormously helpful in saving lives and helping everyone they could” says Sergeant Rick Bidaisee of the Jasper RCMP Detachment. “We want to thank everyone who selflessly pitched in and helped us.”

Two collision analysts attended the collision scene and the investigation will be ongoing. The highway was reopened at 4:30 a.m. No information will be made available about the cause of this collision until a report is completed, and only if charges are laid.
