Woman from Iqaluit charged with child abduction

Iqaluit, Nunavut – On September 22, Iqaluit Detachment members were contacted by a concerned parent identifying he was not able locate his children. The detachment initiated an investigation validating the mother and two children had departed Iqaluit. The investigation included consultation with the Canada Border Services Agency and the National Missing Children Operation unit in Ottawa. “V” Division Support units also contributed to the investigation.

On Thursday September 27, 2018 a 39-year-old female was arrested upon return to Iqaluit, Nu. and charged with two counts of Abduction of a Person Under 16, Section 280(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. The female will appear Friday afternoon at the Nunavut Court of Justice on the noted charges.

The RCMP are not able to identify the female, due to the privacy of the children, however can confirm the children’s whereabouts are known and the children are not in danger. The incident remains under investigation to determine if any other additional charges will be forthcoming.
