RCMP continue to search for possible lost snowmobiler

Behchoko, Northwest Territories – RCMP advise the search for the missing snowmobiler continues today. Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA) are assisting with air search and ground search teams are canvassing the areas around Behchoko and Whati.

As the cell phone call location appears to be from an area near Behchoko, efforts continue to focus on Behchoko and Whati. The alternate areas of Yellowknife, Hay River and Fort Providence are still included and are being actively investigated by RCMP.

We do not have a date, time or location last seen, which is challenging in organizing search and rescue activities.

We are unable to provide details on the type of call, who made it, etc. We can confirm the call came in at approximately 11:50 pm January 7, just before midnight.

The information we have indicates the missing snowmobiler is Shawn Lafferty, age 20. Unconfirmed if he is from Yellowknife or outside the Territory. The lost snowmobiler may be travelling on a Blue 550 snowmobile and could be wearing a red jacket, red hat, orange mitts, orange scarf.

We encourage anyone who has been travelling the snowmobile trails to report any single male traveller, on snow machine or on foot to Behchoko RCMP 867-392-1111, your local RCMP detachment or CRIMESTOPPERS.

“We don’t have any new information, however, we continue the search for the possible lost snowmobiler. If you’re out on the trails in between Yellowknife, Hay River, Fort Providence, Behchoko or Whati please be alert to any single male travellers, on foot or on snow machine and report it to RCMP. No detail may be too small to assist us to locate this traveller” states Marie York-Condon NT RCMP Media Relations.

Anyone with information on this traveller is asked to contact either Behchoko RCMP at 867-392-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, www.nwtnutips.com, (click on “submit a web tip”) or text: nwtnutips to 274637.
