RCMP attend firearms incident at Yellowknife public library, one male in custody

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories – Yellowknife RCMP received a call for service at approximately 4:00 pm this afternoon, February 5, 2019.

There was a report of possible possession of a firearm by a male near the public library downtown.

RCMP responded and contained a perimeter around the location. As members were proceeding with the evacuation of the area, the male suspect was located and taken into custody. He was arrested without incident. A replica handgun was located and seized.

The event unfolded and was contained within 15 minutes of the call for service. No fire arms were discharged during this event. At this time, no injuries have been reported.

This was an isolated incident and there is no public safety concern at this time.

“This was an event that occurred in a high traffic public place with several RCMP members responding. We want to assure the public that the event was quickly contained and the risk minimized. We are just starting our investigation so have no further details at this time. We hope to have an update tomorrow” states Marie York-Condon, Northwest Territories RCMP Media Relations.
