UPDATE: RCMP charge youth in relation to incident at public library in Yellowknife

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories – Yellowknife RCMP have charged a 16-year-old male youth in connection with the RCMP response to a report of possible possession of a firearm by a male near the public library downtown.

The youth was arrested at the scene without incident. A replica handgun was located and seized.

The youth is charged with Mischief s.430(4) CC and Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose s.88(2) CC.

A youth cannot be named under the Young Offenders Act.

He will appear in Territorial Youth Court at a later date.

“This shows the serious consequences related to firearms, whether real or replica. Persons should exercise caution and follow the guidelines for safe storage and transport of all firearms. We are thankful this incident ended quickly and safely” states Marie York-Condon, Northwest Territories RCMP Media Relations.

This was an isolated incident and there is no public safety concern at this time.
