Drugs and stolen licence plates seized

Calgary, Alberta – The Calgary Police Service has seized drugs and multiple stolen licence plates as the result of two separate traffic stops.

On Friday, March 1, 2019, in the community of Sunalta, officers observed a vehicle with a licence plate that did not match the description of the vehicle and a traffic stop was initiated. As a result of the traffic stop, police seized 73 grams of methamphetamine, as well as powder cocaine and heroin.

Two people were charged with drug-related offences. Alexandra Elisabeth LAUGHLIN, 33, and Trevor Harley QUIGLEY, 30, both of Calgary, are charged with the following:

one count of possession of methamphetamines for the purpose of trafficking

two counts of possession of cocaine

one count of possession of heroin

On the same day in the community of Bowness, officers conducted a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle and located several stolen licence plates within the vehicle. In addition, 28 grams of fentanyl and a small quantity of methamphetamine were also seized.

Police would like to remind citizens to ensure that their vehicle licence plate is correct and secure.

Every year approximately 7,000 licence plates are stolen in Calgary. These stolen plates are used by criminals in the commission of other crimes, such as auto theft, robberies and traffic violations. Thieves use the stolen plates to disguise a vehicle or to avoid detection by police.

Citizens can help prevent licence plate thefts by:

Utilizing secure plate screws

Parking in busy, well lit areas

Not backing into parking stalls

Parking with the rear licence plate visible to driving lanes

Frequently checking their licence plate to ensure the correct plate is on their vehicle

If you discover that your licence plate has been stolen, report it as soon as possible by calling the Calgary Police Service non-emergency number, 403-266-1234.
