UPDATE: Charges laid in relation to school bus collision and armed robbery in Springbrook

Blackfalds, Alberta – On January 22, 2019 Blackfalds RCMP responded to a report of a collision between a pickup truck and school bus and subsequent armed robbery. Attending members determined that the male driver of a stolen pickup truck collided head-on with the school bus with seven children on board. The driver then exited the truck and brandished a handgun at a passerby who stopped to offer assistance. The male then departed in the victim’s vehicle. Neither the victim of the robbery or the occupants of the school bus were physically injured during this incident.

On April 23, 2019 Jason IONSON of Red Deer, AB was charged in relation to this incident. His charges include robbery, assault with a weapon, and dangerous driving. IONSON has been in custody since February 26, 2019 on unrelated matters.

IONSON has been charged with the following:

1: s. 344(1)(B) – Robbery with weapon

2: s. 267(a) – Assault with weapon

3: s. 355(a) – PSP over $5000

4: s. 320.13 (1) – Dangerous driving

5: s. 320.16(1) – Fail to remain at scene of accident

6: s. 85(2)(a) – use of weapon in committing indictable offence

7: s. 88(1) – possess weapon for dangerous purpose

There will be no further releases on this matter.
