Lethbridge Police and Fire investigating fatal house fire

Lethbridge, Alberta – Lethbridge Police and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services are investigating a fatal house fire.

On July 20, 2019 at approximately 1:30 a.m. fire fighters from all four stations responded to a residence along the 600 block of 5 Street South. Upon arrival crews found no visible fire with limited smoke coming from the door to the basement.

Crews entered and found heavy smoke with a small amount of flames. The fire was quickly extinguished and a male occupant was located inside. The 50-year-old male was transported to Chinook Regional Hospital in life threatening condition and later succumbed to his injuries. A dog was also found deceased inside the home.

The fire remains under investigation.

Damage is estimated at approximately $200,000.

As the investigation is in its early stages there will be no media availability today. An interview opportunity will be scheduled for Monday.
