Lethbridge Police officer issued ticket in connection with pedestrian collision

Lethbridge, Alberta – Lethbridge Police have issued a violation ticket to an on-duty officer involved in a collision with a pedestrian late Wednesday night.

On August 14, 2019 at approximately 10:45 p.m. a patrol officer was operating a marked police cruiser when he exited the parking lot of the University Drive Alliance Church. As he began to proceed eastbound along Columbia Boulevard he struck a female pedestrian who was walking northbound in the crosswalk at the intersection with Berkley Place. The officer had attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision. He immediately exited his vehicle to render assistance and two other officers who had been in the same area, called for EMS and secured the scene. Paramedics attended and examined the 27-year-old female, who sustained minor injuries. She declined to attend hospital and friends arrived to take her home.

The incident was witnessed by one member of the public and the two other officers. Following an investigation, the officer was issued a provincial violation ticket (Traffic Safety Act) for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The ticket carries a mandatory penalty of $776 and four demerit points.
