Update – Cross Lake RCMP investigate fatal house fire

Cross Lake, Manitoba – Investigators have determined that the fire in the residence was deliberately set.

On August 11, 2019, 38-year-old Leona Blacksmith, from Cross Lake, was arrested and charged with Second Degree Murder in relation to the death of the 93-year-old female on August 9, 2019.

Blacksmith was remanded into custody and scheduled to appear in Thompson Provincial court on August 12, 2019.

On August 9, 2019, at approximately 3:30 am, Cross Lake RCMP officers noticed smoke coming from a residence in the community. They attempted, but were unable to gain entry through the front door due to heavy smoke.

The officers broke multiple windows to help clear the smoke and immediately noticed a female on the floor of the home. They entered and brought her outside to safety. The 93-year-old female was taken to hospital but succumbed to her injuries.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner along with the RCMP continue to investigate.
