Witnesses and video surveillance sought to unprovoked assault; Woman attacked by male with pipe

Nanaimo, BC – The Nanaimo RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance following a vicious assault of an adult female in downtown Nanaimo, by an unknown male wielding a pipe. The incident took place at approximately 7:30 pm on Saturday October 12th, 2019 in front of the Dorchester Hotel on Chapel St. Following the assault, the suspect male ran off and was not located.

Police responded to reports from several pedestrians that a female had just been assaulted. Officers attended and located the injured 28-year-old with significant but non-life threatening injuries. The female told police, she had just walked out of the Dorchester Hotel when she was suddenly attacked by a male with a pipe. She managed to fight him off and he took off running north bound along Front St. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect male jump into a waiting white GMC pickup, parked across from 38 Front St. The vehicle then drove north bound on Front St.

The female victim elected to not go to local hospital but was treated at the scene by attending BC Paramedics. The suspect male is described as white, heavy set, sporting a beard and wearing dark clothing.

Investigators are presently canvassing the area for video surveillance and are asking motorists who have dash cam video from 7 pm to 7:45 pm on Saturday October 12th, along Front St, Commercial Ave or Terminal Ave, to please call the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
