Brooks RCMP recover boater from Lake Newell

Newell County, Alberta – On October 5, 2019 at approximately 8:15 p.m, the Brooks RCMP responded to a complaint of an overdue boater. The adult male boater was last seen by his wife leaving the Kinbrook Island Provincial Park boat launch heading south towards Jackfish Bay in Lake Newell. The boater never returned that evening. The Brooks Fire Department was called in to assist with a search of the shore of Lake Newell along with assistance of the Brooks RCMP Detachment.

The male was not located that evening however a large multi agency search took place the following day where the boat was located broadside against an island in the lake. All PFD’s were located in the boat. Shortly after, shoes, a jacket and a vest, all confirmed to be the male’s clothing were located floating in the water and at the waters edge of the shore.

That male was not located and the search for him continued.

On October 19, 2019 a 14-day search for a missing boater came to an end. The search began on October 5, 2019 and involved two Detachments, two Volunteer Fire Departments, Alberta Parks Conservation Officers, South Eastern Alberta Search and Rescue (SEASAR), the Calgary Police Service Helicopter, the RCMP Helicopter and a pair of civilians who specialize in recovery.

On October 19, 2019 at 1:00 p.m., the 45-year-old male from Calgary was located on the floor of Lake Newell with the use of an ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) owned and operated by the civilian pair. At 1:30 p.m., the body was recovered and subsequently transported to the Calgary Medical examiner’s office.

The investigation is ongoing.
