UPDATE: 16 Vehicles Involved in Collision on Highway 2, Five Transported to Hospital

Grande Prairie, Alberta – On November 6, 2019 at approximately 9:35 a.m., Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a 911 call of a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 2, north of Highway 672 (Emerson Trail).

RCMP, EMS, and Fire responded immediately to the location. Sixteen vehicles were found to have collided in the southbound lanes of Highway 2. EMS and Fire treated numerous passengers on scene for minor injuries, and 5 people were transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that weather and road conditions were factors in this collision. At the time of the collision, there was thick, heavy fog which caused reduced visibility and icy roadways. Speed is also being investigated as a factor.

Both the southbound and northbound lanes of Highway 2 were blocked for several hours, to allow emergency crews to safely tend to the scene, however only the southbound lanes were directly impacted by the collision. Detours were put in place, with the assistance of County of Grande Prairie Regional Enforcement Services, Fish and Wildlife, and Ledcor.

RCMP continue to investigate this collision. No charges have been laid at this time.

RCMP remind motorists that weather and road conditions can change quickly at this time of year, leading to icy roadways and reduced visibility. Motorists are encouraged to reduce their speed and allow themselves extra time for travelling due to the unpredictable conditions.


Grande Prairie, Alberta – Grande Prairie RCMP advise that Highway 2 has now re-opened to traffic in all directions.

RCMP and other emergency services are no longer on scene. RCMP continue to investigate this collision. An update will be provided when additional information becomes available.


Grande Prairie, Alberta – (11:23 AM) Grande Prairie RCMP, along with EMS and Fire, are currently on scene of a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 2, north of Grande Prairie.

RCMP advise that approximately 20 vehicles have been involved in a collision in the southbound lanes of Highway 2, north of Emerson Trail.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 2 are currently blocked. Detours have been established. Motorists are asked to avoid the area, or reroute via Emerson Trail. Delays are expected to take several hours.

No further information is available at this time. An update will be provided when available.
