Canmore RCMP charge male after pursuit on Highway 1 between Canmore and Cochrane

Canmore, Alberta – On Nov. 12, 2019, at approximately 8:45 p.m., RCMP Traffic Services stopped a vehicle for a traffic offence on Highway 1 near the Bourgeau Trailhead west of Banff. The vehicle pulled to a stop, but failed to remain stopped and continued. For public safety reasons, police did not pursue the vehicle.

The same vehicle was located by RCMP Traffic Services a short time later on Highway 1 in the Canmore area, travelling in the westbound lanes into oncoming traffic. After the vehicle failed to pull over for the RCMP, a pursuit was initiated due to the high risk that the driver was posing to the public.

A tire deflation device was deployed and the vehicle swerved towards RCMP members before driving over the device, bringing the vehicle to a stop within a short distance. The male driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. No injuries were sustained as a result of this incident.
