Excessive speed factor in two collisions

Calgary, Alberta – The Calgary Police Service believes speed to be a factor in two serious collisions that occurred earlier this weekend, with one resulting in a fatality.

Fatal collision

On Sunday, Nov. 17, 2019, at approximately 2:15 p.m., police were called to the area of 130 Avenue and Deerfoot Trail S.E. for reports of a single-vehicle collision.

It is believed the driver of the vehicle lost control while merging onto Deerfoot Trail from 130 Avenue S.E. The vehicle rolled and struck a light standard before coming to a rest.

The driver of the vehicle, a male in his 50s, suffered fatal injuries. The front seat passenger, a female in her 20s, suffered serious injuries and was transported to hospital.

Excessive speed is considered a factor in this collision.

Erin Woods collision

On Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at approximately 11:10 p.m., police were called to the intersection of 52 Street and Erin Woods Drive S.E. for reports of a single-vehicle collision.

The investigation discovered that a vehicle driven by a man in his 50s was travelling north on 52 Street, and lost control as it approached Erin Woods Drive. The vehicle crossed the centre median and proceeded off the road where it struck a tree and became partially engulfed in flames.

The Calgary Fire Department responded to the scene and was able to extinguish the flames and extricate the driver from the vehicle. The driver was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Excessive speed is considered to be a factor in this collision, it is unknown if alcohol or drugs were factors in the incident.
