ASIRT to Investigate: 12-Year-Old Reportedly Injured After Becoming Involved During the Arrest of her Mother in Lethbridge

Lethbridge, Alberta – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the circumstances surrounding an injury reportedly sustained by a 12-year old girl during an arrest by members of the Lethbridge Police Service.

On November 16, 2019, Lethbridge police officers responded to calls for service on two occasions to a residence in Lethbridge. On the first occasion, officers attended and a female occupant of the downstairs unit was placed under arrest. When officers returned to the police station, they discovered that the original caller had provided a false name, and that the woman had outstanding warrants for her arrest.

Officers attended to the residence again and encountered the 33-year old woman who was attempting to damage the building, and again provided a false name to police. The officers informed her that they were aware she had provided a false name and that there were warrants for her arrest.

A physical struggle then ensued to take her into custody, and during the arrest, the woman’s 12-year old daughter became involved. The 33-year old woman was handcuffed and taken into custody and as a result of the struggle, the 12 year old received minor injuries and was treated at hospital and released.

On November 19, 2019, legal counsel representing the 12 year old, reported to police that she had been injured during her mother’s arrest. The Lethbridge Police Service made a notification to ASIRT, pursuant to Section 46.1 of the Police Act and an independent ASIRT investigation was subsequently directed.

“I have complete confidence in the training and professionalism of our officers. Transparency is critical in maintaining public trust and we welcome the independent investigation by ASIRT”, said Chief Scott Woods.
