UPDATE: Two in custody after attempted bank robbery in Cochrane, Alberta

Cochrane Alberta – On March 4th 2020 Ian Cecil age 38 of Morley, Alberta was charged with:

Robbery Section 344(b) of the Criminal Code

Resist Arrest Section 129(a) of the Criminal Code

Using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence. Section 85(2)(a) of the Criminal Code

Hostage taking Section 279.1(2) of the Criminal Code

Ian Cecil has been remanded in custody until March 5th 2020 with court in Airdrie.

Additionally police have charged Hayden Cecil age 45 of Morley with:

Robbery Section 344(b) of the Criminal Code

Hayden Cecil has been released from custody with Court in Airdrie on March 5th 2020.

BACKGROUND

Cochrane, Alberta – On March 3 2020 Cochrane RCMP received a complaint of an attempted bank robbery at the Royal Bank of Canada in Cochrane.

Witnesses reported that a male told a client that he had a gun. The suspect then went to the teller and stated that he wanted to rob the bank.

Police arrived within seconds of receiving the complaint. Eyewitnesses directed police to the suspect who was taken into custody a block away. A conducted energy weapon was deployed when the suspect failed to follow commands in this high risk incident.

The male was taken to Cochrane detachment where after being checked on by Emergency Medical Services is being held pending a Judicial Interm Release Hearing. A second male was also taken into custody.

Although the investigation continues alcohol and drug use are believed to have contributed to this offence.

A further release will be prepared once charges are sworn.
