Fort Vermilion RCMP Lay Charges for Weapon Offences; “suspects pointed a firearm at the victims”

Fort Vermilion, Alberta – On April 6, 2020 at approximately 7:50 p.m., Fort Vermilion RCMP were dispatched to a 9-1-1 call from a victim who had been bear sprayed, as well as a firearm pointed at them.

Members attended and found that two victims were approached by two separate suspects while siting in their vehicle at the Snicklefritz Liquor store in Fort Vermilion. The suspects pointed a firearm at the victims which resulted in the victims confronting the suspects. The victims were then sprayed in the eyes with bear spray. The victims suffered minor injuries as a result. The suspects fled before police arrived. No one else is believed to have been injured during this incident.

As a result of the investigation, two suspects were located and arrested without incident.

Clayborne Paul (28) of Fort Vermilion, has been charged with:

• Pointing a firearm x2 – Sect. 87(1) of the Criminal Code

• Assault with a weapon x2 – Sect. 267(a) of the Criminal Code

• Unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon – Sect. 91(1) of the Criminal Code

• Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose – Sect. 88(1) of the Criminal Code

Brandon Braun (21) of High Level, has been charged with:

• Assault with a weapon x2 – Sect. 267(a) of the Criminal Code

• Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose – Sect. 88(1) of the Criminal Code

• Fail to comply with release order condition – Sect. 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code

Paul and Braun have been released from custody and are scheduled to appear in Fort Vermilion provincial court on June 16, 2020, in relation to these allegations.
