SHOTS FIRED: Red Deer RCMP investigate shooting and have suspect in custody while victim recovers in hospital – UPDATED

Red Deer, Alberta – Red Deer RCMP have laid charges against the suspect accused in last Thursday’s shooting.

Twenty year old Austin Sim-Pelletier is charged with attempted murder, seven firearms offences and being disguised while committing an offence.

Sim-Pelletier remains in remand until his next court appearance on April 21 in Red Deer.

BACKGROUND

Red Deer, Alberta – On April 9, 2020, at approximately 5:50 p.m., Red Deer RCMP received a call of shots fired at a parking lot near the Holy Family School in Red Deer.

Further investigation revealed that two males allegedly met at the parking lot of the Holy Family School. Upon arrival, one of the males, a 20-year-old male from Red Deer, discharged a firearm, striking the other male, a 21-year-old male from Red Deer, before fleeing in an SUV. A number of individuals witnessed this incident.

The victim was taken to hospital and treated for injuries that have been determined to be non-life-threatening. The victim remains in hospital at this time.

Within a short time, Red Deer RCMP, with the assistance of the RCMP Police Dog Service and RCMP General Investigation Section, contained an area around the male suspect’s home in the Anders area. The RCMP Emergency Response Team were deployed and attended to assist with containment and negotiations. As a result of successful negotiations, the suspect surrendered on April 10, 2020, at approximately 1 a.m., and was arrested without incident. The suspect remains in RCMP custody pending charges and a judicial hearing.

Red Deer RCMP, along with RCMP General Investigation Section and RCMP Forensic Identification Services, continue to maintain a presence in the Anders neighborhood for the purposes of a search and neighborhood inquiries. This is anticipated to continue until later this afternoon.

This is believed to be an isolated incident and the public are not believed to be at risk.
